A ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) announced that the tariff flag for the month of April will remain green, which means that electricity consumers will not have any additional costs on their electricity bills.
According to the entity, the green flag was chosen because of the favorable conditions for energy generation, with the reservoirs of hydroelectric plants at satisfactory levels.
“Since December 2024, the tariff flag has remained green, reflecting the favorable conditions for energy generation in the country. Even with the transition from the rainy to the dry season, generation from hydroelectric plants, which is cheaper than thermal generation, remains at stable levels,” the Agency reported.
Despite maintaining the green flag for the fifth consecutive month, projections recently released by CCEE (Electric Energy Trading Chamber) indicate a high probability of changing to the yellow flag in May.
In this scenario, there would be an increase in consumers' electricity bills of R$1,88 for every 100 kWh consumed. The forecast takes into account the beginning of the dry season — which normally begins in April — and the consequent reduction in rainfall in some regions of the country.
According to CCEE, the drop in water volume in reservoirs could lead to the activation of thermoelectric plants, which have higher costs, directly impacting the value of tariffs for consumers.

tariff flags
The system tariff flags was created by ANEEL in 2015 and aims to adjust the cost of electricity for Brazilian consumers on a monthly basis, consisting of the colors green, yellow and red (at levels 1 and 2).
This sequence indicates the cost of energy for the following month: green means there is no additional cost, yellow indicates a slight increase in the energy bill and red means a higher cost for Brazilians.
The sequence reflects the variable cost of energy production, considering factors such as the availability of water resources, the advancement of renewable sources, as well as the activation of more expensive generation sources such as thermoelectric plants.
“The tariff flag system is an essential transparency tool, allowing consumers to monitor, month by month, the energy generation conditions in the country. ANEEL reinforces that it is crucial to maintain good consumption habits to avoid waste and contribute to the sustainability of the electricity sector”, explains the Agency.
