An explosion at an energy substation, located in the municipality of Peritoró (MA), on the night of this Wednesday (6), caused a blackout in more than ten cities in the central region of the State.

The incident caused power outages in homes, businesses, and essential services, affecting municipalities such as Bacabal, Codó, Coroatá, Dom Pedro, Pedreiras, and others. Peritoró is located approximately 237 km from the capital, São Luís.

The power substation is operated by Eletronorte, which reported mobilizing technical teams to investigate the source of the failure and restore power as quickly as possible. The causes of the incident will be investigated and reported to the National Electric System Operator (ONS), which is responsible for analyzing the event.

In a statement, Equatorial Energia reported that it maintained direct contact with Eletronorte, monitoring the developments of the situation. “The restoration of power was carried out gradually for technical reasons, starting at 00:02 in some municipalities and being completed at 2:50 this Thursday (07),” the company reported.

One more case

The case registered this Wednesday (06), is far from being an isolated case. Only this year, the Canal Solar has already produced several reports highlighting explosions at power substations in the country. The latest, for example, occurred at the UFC (Federal University of Ceará) Pici Campus in Fortaleza, Ceará, at the end of June.

The substation was next to the César Cals de Oliveira Filho health center, which had to suspend services as a security measure, as the problem caused momentary fluctuations and affected power distribution throughout the campus.
