O minister of MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy), Alexandre Silveira, confirmed that the Brazil intends to include batteries in the next capacity reserve auction, scheduled to take place this year.

A affirmation was especially, this Wednesday (20), during the panel “Latin American Energy: Choices and new directions”, at the Latin America Forum, at CERAWeek by S&P Global, in Houston, in United States. 

O announcement occurred amid strong pressure from the renewable sector for the inclusion of batteries in the event. According to Silveira, the measure is already being studied by MME technicians.

This will be the second capacity reserve auction in Brazil. The first took place in 2021, resulting in the contracting of 4,6 GW of power. 

This type of The event aims to contract power for the electrical system from thermoelectric and hydroelectric generation sources, known as dispatchable sources. 

At the beginning of the month, the MME started the Public Consultation to discuss the guidelines for this auction, with contributions being able to be sent until March 28th, in accordance with the Ordinance No. 774, published in the DOU (Official Gazette of the Union) on March 8th.
