In the small community of Mariá Helena, in the Atacama Desert, Chile officially inaugurated the Quillagua solar plant, which has 221 MWp and a 1,2 GWh energy storage system. In total, the project is equipped with more than 452 photovoltaic modules.
“We are proud to begin operations in Quillagua months ahead of schedule. We look forward to sharing this moment with our partners and the community, as well as local institutions and authorities,” commented Antonio Cammisecra, CEO of ContourGlobal.
He also highlighted the importance of batteries, which are essential for stabilizing the grid when dealing with oversupply during the day and the challenges of peak demand. In addition to the environmental impact, the project has boosted the local economy. 313 direct jobs and 176 indirect jobs were created during the construction, which involved professionals of 6 nationalities.
During the inauguration ceremony, Luis Felipe Ramos, Chile’s Undersecretary of Energy, reinforced the country’s commitment to the energy transition. According to Ramos, projects like Quillagua are essential for the country to achieve its goals: 2 GW of storage capacity by 2030 and 6 GW by 2050.
