A 5th National Environmental Conference, promoted by the MMA (Ministry of Environment and Climate Change), takes place until May 2025 in the competencies state and national.

The state stages will take place from January 15 to March 15, while the national conference is scheduled to take place in Brasília from May 6 to 9, 2025.

The event seeks to promote debates, develop proposals to tackle the climate emergency and find solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The theme of this edition “Climate Emergency – The challenge of ecological transformation” has the following thematic axes: Mitigation, Adaptation and Disaster Preparedness; Ecological Transformation; Climate Justice and Governance and Environmental Education.

The purpose of the meeting is to bring together representatives of civil society, traditional communities, indigenous peoples, the private sector, representatives of the public sector and municipal, state, district or federal governments.

Delegates elected at municipal conferences, guests and observers may participate in state conferences.

National environmental scenario

According to Global Climate Highlights, 2023 was the hottest year in history, causing floods and heat waves across the country. One of the most recent cases is in Rio Grande do Sul, which has faced extreme weather events directly linked to the consequences of global warming.

The most recent report of the SEEG (Gas Emissions Estimation System) Greenhouse Effect) points out that in Brazil the increase in the planet's temperature is due to deforestation, followed by agriculture and livestock farming and in third place emissions in the energy sector, by the burning of fossil fuels in transport and industry.

Furthermore, in the year 2024, the planet surpassed the “safe limit” of a global temperature increase of 1,5ºC, according to Cemaden (National Center for Monitoring and Alerts for Natural Disasters).

Check out the international ranking of accumulated emissions:

In accordance with internationally agreed commitments, the country needs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 470 million tons by 2025, considering emissions recorded in 2020.

Although almost half of Brazil's energy matrix comes from renewable sources, the energy sector has a significant share of greenhouse gas emissions.
