The Civil Police of Mato Grosso arrested seven people this Tuesday (18) during Operation Hidden Copper, which investigates a criminal group specialized in the theft of copper cables from solar energy systems installed on rural properties.

According to the police, the crimes caused approximately R$ 2 million in losses to the victims. The investigation involves incidents reported in the municipalities of Sorriso, Ipiranga do Norte, Nova Ubiratã, Boa Esperança do Norte, Campo Verde, and Primavera do Leste.

The operation was conducted by the Sorriso (MT) Police Station, through the Derf (Specialized Robbery and Theft Division), after the investigation identified the activities of a group involved in both the theft of cables and the sale of the material.

According to the Civil Police, after the thefts, the cables were removed from rural properties and subsequently resold in the metropolitan region of Cuiabá (MT). The investigations began after an incident in April of this year on a rural property in Boa Esperança do Norte (MT).

During the investigation, the Civil Police identified evidence of a structured operation, with a division of tasks among the group members for the removal of copper cables used in photovoltaic systems from the properties. Based on the evidence gathered during the investigation, the Police requested the judicial measures that were carried out on Tuesday.

"The detainees were referred for the appropriate legal procedures and remain at the disposal of the Justice system. Investigations continue to identify others involved and clarify the extent of the criminal group's activities," states the note from the Civil Police of Mato Grosso.
