The ONS (National Electric System Operator) is preparing a special operation to reinforce the security of energy supply during this year's elections. The strategy will be adopted amid projections of a more intense drought in the North region, associated with the effects of Super El Niño.

Despite the predicted weather conditions, the general director of ONS, Marcio Rea, stated this Thursday (20) that, so far, there is no indication of risk to the energy supply during the election period.

The operation will be coordinated jointly with the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) and foresees closer monitoring of the electrical system conditions during voting. Special attention should be paid to more remote locations with greater access difficulties.

According to Rea, this type of planning is part of the Operator's role in large-scale, nationally significant events, where specific procedures are adopted to enhance the safety and responsiveness of the system.

El Niño increases attention on the system's operation.

Although he did not identify a specific threat to supply during the elections, the director-general highlighted that the potential effects of El Niño make the operating scenario more challenging, especially looking ahead to next year.

The ONS (National System Operator) is already evaluating preventative actions to address potential impacts of the weather phenomenon. However, uncertainties remain regarding its intensity and the effects it may have on the Brazilian electrical system.

As an example of the responsiveness, the executive mentioned previous episodes in which more than 20 towers were affected without compromising service to consumers.

The statements were given to journalists after Rea's participation in the event "Super El Niño and the Resilience of the Brazilian Electricity Sector," promoted by ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency), in Brasília (DF).
