Solar has a return of up to 46% per year, even with the rise of the dollar and interest rates

The drop in the price of solar panels on the international market and in Brazil exceeded analysts' expectations in 2024.

According to a survey published this Wednesday (22) by the platform My Solar Financing, the price of solar technology fell, on average, approximately 60% between 2022 and 2025 for the end consumer in the country.

According to the study, which compared prices from more than three thousand Brazilian installation companies, the return on investment for those who install photovoltaic systems on roofs varies between 35% and 46% per year, depending on the region and the size of the project.

The mapping also shows that neither the recent increase in dollar and not even the rate hike Selic (interest rates) in recent months have managed to reduce the return on investment in solar panels.

“On the contrary, the drop in price was so great that now investing in a photovoltaic solar energy system for a home or business may be the best use of the owner’s money,” explains Carolina Reis, executive director of Meu Financiamento Solar.

In the international market, prices from Chinese manufacturers, for example, went from US$0,23/W to US$0,08/W between 2022 and 2025.

“In Brazil, the return on investment in solar panels in 2022 was around 20% per year and, therefore, the payback has practically doubled in the last three years”, adds the executive.

Solar panel financing tends to improve

According to Carolina, even with the increase in the basic interest rate in Brazil, the drop in the price of solar panels has made financing the best option for purchasing a photovoltaic system for those who do not want to pay out of pocket.

According to the executive, today, in most cases, the financing installment is cheaper than the savings generated in the customer's monthly electricity bill. In this way, the solar energy system ends up generating enough savings to pay the financing installments and, in some cases, not only that, but it also brings a profit to the investor.

More than 4,6 million properties supplied with solar energy

Currently, self-generation of solar energy supplies more than 4,6 million properties in Brazil, including residences, businesses, industries, rural properties and public buildings, according to a report by ABSOLAR (Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association).

In total, there are already more than 35 GW of installed power on rooftops and small plots of land in the country, with accumulated investments of around R$164,1 billion. The association also points out that photovoltaic technology is already present in more than 99,9% of municipalities (5.563 of the total of 5.570 cities) in all Brazilian states.
