A group of Brazilian researchers published a article No. Journal of Materials Chemistry in which they discuss a strategy all with improve both efficiency as for stability of perovskite solar cells. This research can assist in the development of this technology, the so-called 3rd generation cells.

The method used in the study involves a class of 2D materials called MXene. These inorganic materials combine transition metals, carbon and/or nitrogen together with a functional group such as fluorine, oxygen or hydroxyl. They have high levels de electrical conductivity, thermal stability e transmittance (ability to be passed through by light without absorbing it).

The MXene used in this study was Ti3C2Tx, functioning as material dopant PMMA (Polymethyl methacrylate), then used as passivation layer (layer of material added to reduce possible defects in the polycrystalline solid, in interaction with the environment or due to the internal conformation of the solid) in perovskite solar cells with inverted architecture.

The study identified that the efficiency of the cells increased de 19% to 22% with the use of this MXene. Furthermore, the devices reached the double de working time no drop in performance when compared to devices PULL the presence of passivation layer.

In an interview with Canal Solar, materials physicist at the São Paulo State University Júlio de Mesquita Filho (UNESP) Bauru campus João Pedro Ferreira Assunção, first author of the article, provided more details about the study.
