The ONS (National Electric System Operator) reinforced, during the regular meeting of the CMSE (Electric Sector Monitoring Committee) held this week, the need for additional measures to guarantee the energy supply during the dry period.

Among the recommended actions is the anticipation of the start-up of the 500 kV Rio–Lagos Terminal Transmission Line, currently scheduled for October 2025. The Operator also suggested the activation of at least two thermoelectric plants, with emphasis on the dispatch of LNG-fired thermal plants even without the requirement of a minimum advance of 60 days.

During the meeting, it was decided that the ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) must take the necessary measures to enable the use of the Luiz Oscar Rodrigues de Melo and Porto do Sergipe I thermoelectric plants, in order to offer operational flexibility during times of greatest demand on the system.

“Once the dispatch of the Luiz Oscar Rodrigues de Melo and Porto do Sergipe I thermal plants is viable, we will gain more flexibility in operations,” stated ONS Director General Marcio Rea.

Hydrological conditions and projections for 2025

The ONS also presented an update on energy supply projections through December 2025. According to the agency, the most recent data indicate an improvement in hydropower indicators in the South region, with expectations of more favorable storage throughout the dry season.

Despite the positive scenario in the South, it was reported that the outflows at the Jupiá and Porto Primavera hydroelectric plants should remain close to the minimum operational values, being increased only if there is a need to reinforce the system's power over the coming months.
