A survey by the consultancy CELA (Clean Energy Latin America) identified that Brazil has 111 green hydrogen and derivative projects under development, with R$454 billion in announced investments. The projects are spread across 15 states and are expected to require approximately 90 GW of installed capacity.

The mapping is part of CELA's strategic plan to support investors, governments, and companies in the energy transition. The projects include, in addition to hydrogen, green ammonia, e-methanol, and green steel, considered essential for decarbonizing sectors such as agriculture and heavy industry.

The tool launched by CELA provides insight into the progress of projects in the country, including the location of emerging hubs, profiles of end buyers (offtakers), project status, and business model analyses. "The energy transition is underway in the country – and green hydrogen can play a central role in this process," says Camila Ramos, CEO of CELA.

Demand of 90 GW

The study of consulting indicates that Brazil has strong competitiveness in the production of green ammonia, with costs ranging from US$539 to US$1.103 per ton, below or within the range of ammonia produced with fossil fuels.

Already green hydrogen can be produced in the country at levelized costs between US$2,83/kg and US$6,16/kg in strategic regions. Economic viability, combined with renewable potential, reinforces Brazil's role as a future exporter of green fuels, according to the consultancy.
