The BEESP 2025 (Energy Balance of the State of São Paulo), released on December 30th by Semil (Secretariat of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics), presented figures on the state's performance regarding renewable energy sources.
In 2024, solar photovoltaic energy accounted for 12% of the electricity generated in the state of São Paulo. With a generation of 10,4 TWhthe growth was 16% compared to the previous year, when the state generated 8,9 TWh.
This increase has consolidated solar energy as the third largest source of electricity generation in the state, behind only hydroelectric power and biomass. According to the report, São Paulo's leadership in solar generation stands out mainly in the distributed generation (DG) model.
Only in 2024 did the municipalities of São Paulo reach the installed capacity of 6,2 GW In this model, with the installation of approximately 1 GW throughout the year, positioning the state as a national leader in the adoption of distributed photovoltaic systems.
The analysis also provided an interesting comparison between SP Brazil and other countries: 59% of São Paulo's gross domestic energy supply came from renewable sources, placing the state ahead of the national average. 50% and the average of developed OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries, which recorded 13,2% of renewables in 2023.
In addition to solar energy, the BEESP 2025 also highlights the relevance of other renewable sources in the composition of the gross domestic energy supply.
Hydropower, which represents 17% Regarding electricity generation in São Paulo, it continues to be one of the main energy sources in the region, with production both domestically and imported from the SIN (National Interconnected System).
The report also highlighted the diversity of renewable alternatives available in the state, which include biogas and black liquor from the pulp and paper industry.
