ABNT (Brazilian Association of Technical Standards) must begin, within 30 days, the process of revising the ABNT NBR 17153 standard, which defines technical requirements and test methods for secondary cells and batteries for renewable energy storage connected to the electrical grid.

The review will be conducted by Study Commission CE 003:021.001, within the scope of the ABNT/CB-003 Technical Committee – Electricity, through a New Working Item (NIT).

The standard in question applies to all types of stationary batteries, regardless of their chemical composition, as long as they are used to store energy from renewable sources in grid-connected systems.

In a statement sent to members, the ABSOLAR The Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association highlighted the importance of revising the standard for the sector.

The organization believes that this topic is particularly important given the rapid growth of bulk energy storage systems (BESS) in the country and their associated technical implications.

The association also reinforced the need for active participation from professionals and companies in the photovoltaic solar sector in the standardization process, with the goal of contributing to the development of technically consistent requirements aligned with Brazilian realities and international best practices.

A ABSOLAR It also emphasizes that it is monitoring the issue in a structured way through its Storage Working Group, in order to consolidate and address the main demands related to energy storage technologies.

The Working Group operates in a technical and collaborative manner, including the analysis of normative, regulatory, and safety aspects, with the goal of contributing in a qualified way to standardization processes and to the construction of a regulatory environment consistent with the evolution of the Brazilian market.

Technical participation is open.

Professionals, companies, and institutions interested in participating in the revision of the standard should register on the ABNT portal (abntonline.com.br/normalizacao), select the ABNT/CB-003 Committee and the CE 003:021.001 Commission, accept the confidentiality terms, and enable the receipt of communications and alerts of new works.

In addition, participants will be able to contribute to technical meetings, debates, and public consultations that will be held throughout the process.

The update to ABNT NBR 17153 is considered strategic, especially at a time of energy transition, increased demand for hybrid systems, and the consolidation of business models with energy storage.

It was verified on the IEC website that the standard IEC 61427-2:2015/AMD1:2024 Edition 1.0 (2024-03-28) Amendment 1 – Secondary cells and batteries for renewable energy storage – General requirements and methods of test – Part 2: On-grid applications, was revised and a new version published in 2024.
    – The ABNT NBR 17153 standard – Secondary cells and batteries for energy storage from renewable sources connected to the electrical grid (on grid) — General requirements and test methods, was based on IEC 61427-2:2015.
    – By unanimous vote, the members of the CE decided to revise the ABNT NBR 17153 standard to adapt it to the new version published by the IEC, as well as other adjustments that may be necessary to meet the needs of the Brazilian market.
