The Minister of MME (Mines and Energy), Bento Albuquerque, participated, last Friday (07), in a live broadcast promoted by Cemig (Companhia Energética Minas Gerais) and reinforced that the Brazilian electricity sector has shown itself to be resilient in the face of the pandemic of Covid-19.
“We have the SIN (National Interconnected System) which, during this pandemic period, has proven to be quite efficient, providing energy security to the country and the consumer”, highlighted Albuquerque.
The minister also highlighted how the MME has structured itself in relation to the current situation, remembering the constitution of the Sector Crisis Committee, back in March, and the creation of the Covid Account.
“We brought together all the sectoral agents so that together we could build what was best, not only for the health of employees, who were essential for the services that society needed to remain in operation, but also for the health of the electricity sector”.
Regarding Conta-Covid, he stated that it was the first financial operation carried out in the national infrastructure market in the amount of R$15,3 billion. “In this way, we guarantee the health of the electricity sector, particularly the distributors, so that we maintain all segments of both generation and distribution”.
According to the MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy), the operation injected liquidity into the electricity sector, mitigating the impact on electricity bills of the financial effects that the Covid-19 pandemic brought to companies.
Albuquerque also highlighted the concern for low-income consumers and those who provide essential services, ensuring that everyone will continue to be covered. “The challenge remains very great. We care about consumers, especially those with low income, who are part of essential services. All of them are somehow preserved until the end of the year.”
The virtual event also featured the participation of Reynaldo Passanezi, president of Cemig, who commented on the moment of unity that the segment is experiencing in facing the crisis.
“We have been working tirelessly to guarantee the health and safety of our employees and guarantee the highest quality in service provision. We registered more than 250 thousand customers in the Social Tariff during this period and donated hospital equipment. It is a time for us to effectively seek unity,” she concluded.
