Brazil is once again at the center of international debates on energy and sustainability. From June 24 to 26, Rio de Janeiro will host the second edition of the Energy Summit at Cidade das Artes, which will bring together authorities, researchers, executives and experts to discuss the direction of the energy transition in the world.

Curated by MIT Technology Review Brazil, the event is consolidated as one of the largest in the sector in Latin America and the largest at MIT outside the United States.

With the main sponsorship of PetroOrganized by the Brazilian federal government and the government of the state of Rio de Janeiro – through the Secretariat of Energy and Marine Economy – SEENEMAR – the Energy Summit will feature panels organized into thematic tracks covering different renewable energy sources.

Among the highlights are the H2V (green hydrogen), solar energy and wind, biomass, biofuels and storage solutions, as well as energy security, industrial decarbonization, public policies and regulation.

The geopolitics of energy will also be on the agenda, with emphasis on the strategies of countries such as the United States, China and Germany, in addition to debates on innovation and entrepreneurship, including the role of academia, acceleration programs and the performance of energy investment funds.

The program also includes MIT REAP panels, focused on science and technology-based innovation. This year, the meeting will be even more robust and is expected to surpass the numbers of 2024 – when it received more than 10 participants and promoted more than 350 hours of content.

For Hudson Mendonça, CEO of Energy Summit, with almost 90% of the energy matrix composed of clean sources, Brazil has a fundamental role in the global energy transition.

“Not only for its biodiversity and renewable resources, but also for its ability to lead global debates. The Energy Summit connects academic knowledge and market demands, being essential to drive innovations that define the future of sustainable energy,” he emphasized.

Schedule details

The program will be distributed across three main stages, four parallel stages, two masterclass rooms, seven meeting rooms, recording studios, VIP lounges, a coworking village and new content and networking spaces.

The expanded structure reflects the growth of the event and the complexity of the topics that will be discussed, from technological innovation to regulatory, geopolitical and social issues of the energy transition.

According to André Miceli, CEO of MIT Technology Review Brazil, the objective of the event is to go beyond debates, creating an environment where leaders can find applicable solutions to the most urgent issues of the energy transition.

“We want to consolidate Brazil as the epicenter of this global discussion. Our country has a rare combination of natural diversity, technological capacity and excellent academic institutions, and has the vocation to lead the energy future through its ability to dialogue with different regions of the world and connect science, market and public policies in a strategic way,” he said.

This year's edition also expands the number of integrated experiences and events, which delve deeper into the themes discussed on stage and promote connections between different audiences.

Initiatives such as Electric Days are planned, with test drives of electric vehicles and hybrids; Oiweek, promoted by 100 Open Startups, focusing on matchmaking between corporations and startups; and Science & Arts, which brings together art, science and music in an immersive proposal.

There will also be the ESG Stage, focused on themes of diversity, governance and social impact; Women in Energy, which promotes mentoring and networking among women in the sector; and Favela Inova, a training program for entrepreneurs from Rio's favelas.

Confirmed names

With more than 180 confirmed speakers, Energy Summit 2025 will bring together international authorities, academics, CEOs, government representatives, leaders of startups, deep techs and research centers.

Among the names already confirmed are Nobel Peace Prize winner Rattan Lal, professor emeritus at Ohio University; Vaclav Smil, author of How the World Really Works, considered by Bill Gates to be one of the most important books of our time; and Joshua Volz, deputy secretary of energy of the United States.

Also present: Mykola Kolisnyk, Ukraine’s deputy energy minister; Emily Knight, CEO of The Engine fund, which has raised $5,5 billion in investments; Georgina Campbell, CEO of Greentown Labs, the world’s largest cleantech incubator; Badr Burshaid, director of Aramco and president of the Project Management Institute in Saudi Arabia; and Cheryl Martin, founder of Harwich Partners and former director of ARPA-e.

Sustainability in practice

The Energy Summit was certified as a Zero Carbon and Zero Waste event in 2024. All greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated during its realization were offset.

The calculation and monitoring followed the GHG Protocol methodology, ensuring alignment with global best practices. To neutralize the 291 tons of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) emitted, carbon credits certified by the UN were acquired.

In addition, 100% of the waste generated was offset, strengthening the recycling chains of partner cooperatives. The event also implemented selective collection to facilitate recycling and minimize disposal in landfills.

About Energy Summit

Organized in partnership with MIT, the Energy Summit is one of the main innovation and entrepreneurship events in energy and sustainability, which takes place annually in Rio de Janeiro.

It connects the biggest names in energy transition and sustainability, including C-levels from large companies and deep techs, government authorities, international speakers, university rectors and research centers, who together lead essential debates to accelerate the future of energy.

The last edition, in 2024, brought together more than 10 people over 3 days of the event, with more than 350 hours of content. It had the participation of 165 journalists, surpassed 15 million views on the event's official social networks and an estimated repercussion of R$20 million in spontaneous media.
