Brazil sees a 6,8% increase in energy consumption in the 1st semester

One of the reasons for the increase was the more intense use of air conditioning

Brazil high 6,8 energy consumption in 1 semester

High temperatures led Brazilians to use air conditioning more

Brazil consumed 71.317 average MW of energy No. first half of 2024, a 6,8% increase compared to the same period last year.

The data are from CCEE (Electricity Trading Chamber), which monitors the sector's behavior in real time and provides analyzes that support the market in its decision-making.

According to CCEE, the growth in energy consumption was due to two reasons:

  • Heat impact, with more intense use of air conditioning equipment on hotter days;
  • Performance of 15 branches of economic activity monitored by the Commercialization Chamber and which buy their energy on the free market.

Still according to the CCEE, the regulated environment recorded consumption of 44.551 average MW, a growth of 5,3% compared to that recorded in the first half of last year. The environment of free market used 26.760 average MW, an increase of 9,5% year-on-year.

According to CCEE, the data does not consider the export of electricity to Argentina and Uruguay, which was 136 MW on average in this first half of the year. When considering the amount exported in 2024 and in the same period of 2023, the SIN increases 4,8%, while the ACL grows 4,1%.

Consumption by branch of economic activity

All 15 sectors monitored by the Chamber of Commerce recorded an increase in energy consumption in the first six months of this year. The highlights were the branches of Sanitation (40%), Services (24%) and Retail (23%), with the last two being influenced by temperature variation.

On hotter days, commercial establishments such as shopping malls and supermarkets, in addition to the hotel sector, tend to use more intensively air conditioners.

Consumption by region

In the regional assessment, the CCEE found an increase in all states. Seven of them registered double-digit growth compared to the first half of last year, with highlights being Amazonas (18%), Acre (16,2%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (14,8%). The greater demand was mainly influenced by heat waves that have hit these regions in recent months.

The river Grande do Sul was the state with the smallest increase, 0,7%, impacted by the climate tragedy which hit the state in May and June and dropped demand for electricity in the regulated market, with a large part of the population away from home and part of the industry and commercial establishments paralyzed.

Power generation

The first half of the year was marked by good performance of renewable energies. Hydroelectric plants, which are the country's main source, delivered more than 54 thousand average MW to the grid, a volume 2,4% higher than that recorded in the same period last year. Wind, solar and biomass plants, which produced more in the annual comparison, together generated more than 15 thousand average MW.
