The Government of Minas Gerais announced the implementation of the Vale do Aço I Photovoltaic Plant, in Engenheiro Caldas, in the Rio Doce Valley – a complex that will provide a significant increase in energy production, as it will have the highest value in a photovoltaic solar plant registered in the region.
With 5 GWh, the capacity produced at the project will represent 40% of the Advogado Eduardo Soares plant (formerly Boa Esperança) – the largest in Minas Gerais and located in Montes Claros, in the north of the state.
The total investment was R$ 17 million, with R$ 12 million financed by BDMG (Development Bank of Minas Gerais). The other R$5 million comes from partner companies in the operation: Multiluz Solar, Quare Organizações and Solar Vale.
The works are completed, with operations scheduled to begin on July 5. “This year, we (Minas Gerais) reached the milestone of 12 GW of inspected power,” celebrated Governor Romeu Zema.
Production model
The new plant will operate on a shared model, with the energy generated allocated to a consortium and distributed to companies and residential customers. Through this modality, the energy generated will be transferred proportionally to the consortium members, according to their participation quotas.
Fábio Araújo Soares, CEO of Multiluz, explains that the plant's production will result in a reduction of 12,9 million tons of CO2 over 20 years.
“Another important difference is the reversibility of land use: at the end of the plant’s useful life, generally between 25 and 30 years, the area used can be easily recovered and reused, as it does not undergo profound and irreversible changes,” he says.
Currently, the Vale do Rio Doce region has around 41 thousand distributed solar energy generating units, in addition to three centralized plants, located in the municipalities of Caratinga and Ipatinga.
new investments
In addition to the new solar power plant, the Government of Minas Gerais reported that BDMG entered into a partnership with the EIB (European Investment Bank), in which more than R$170 million in credits were made available for solar energy initiatives in the State.
The resources will be used to finance 22 photovoltaic projects in the municipalities of Guaxupé, Carandaí, Matosinhos, Ponte Nova, Carmópolis de Minas, Nova Lima, Caeté, Caxambu, Sete Lagoas, São Francisco, Araxá, Monte Sião, Minduri and Ibiá.
