O HICP (Broad National Consumer Price Index), considered the official measure of inflation in Brazil, registered a increase of 0,44% in September, according to data released by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) this Wednesday (09).
The month's result was influenced by increases in the Housing group (1,80%), after increase in residential electricity prices, which went from -2,77% in August to + 5,36 % In September.
The increase in the electricity bill occurred because of the lack of rain prospects and high temperatures, which ended up culminating in activation of the red tariff flag at the level 1, which adds R$4,463 to every 100 kWh consumed so that the activation of thermoelectric plants relieves pressure on hydroelectric plants.
Another important group researched by IBGE – that of “Food and Beverage” – rose 0,50% in September and also helped to raise inflation in the period, with emphasis on the increase in the price of food delivered to the home (0,56%), after two consecutive months of decline.
In the year, accumulated inflation in Brazil is 3,31% and, in the last 12 months, 4,42%. The value is close to the target limit established by the Central Bank, which is 3%, but with a tolerance of 1,5 pp (percentage point) more or less.
How is the IPCA calculated?
The IPCA has been calculated by the IBGE since 1980 and refers to families with monetary income of 1 to 40 minimum wages, who live in ten metropolitan regions of the country, in addition to the cities of Goiânia, Campo Grande, Rio Branco, São Luís, Aracaju and Brasília.
To calculate the monthly index, prices collected in the period from August 30 to September 27, 2024 (reference) were compared with prices in effect in the period from July 30 to August 29, 2024 (base).
