Starting in July 2027, India plans to make the use of battery energy storage systems mandatory in new government-funded onshore solar and wind power generation projects.
The measure is included in a proposed regulation drafted by the CEA (Central Electricity Authority of India) and is expected to apply to projects that come online after July 1st of next year.
According to Reuters, the new projects should include storage systems with a minimum duration of two hours and a capacity equivalent to at least 10% of the installed power of the development.
In addition to batteries, the draft regulation includes another technological requirement for new renewable energy projects. Projects that come online after July 2027 must also use grid-forming inverters.
The requirement will be expanded starting in July 2029. The minimum capacity will remain at 10%, but the systems must offer at least four hours of storage.
Surplus generation puts pressure on the electrical system.
One of the main challenges faced by the country is managing the surplus of renewable energy generation at certain times of the day.
Between April and June of this year, India reduced its solar energy production by almost 14% due to an excess of clean electricity during the daytime and limitations in transmission infrastructure, according to Reuters.
In this scenario, storage systems can absorb some of the energy produced during periods of higher supply and make it available later, when there is greater demand or lower renewable generation.
