Itaipu allocates R$ 5,2 million for solar power plant at university in Mato Grosso do Sul.

The investment is part of a binational initiative that foresees the investment of over R$ 100 million in renewable energy projects.

Itaipu Binacional allocated approximately R$ 5,2 million to UEMS (State University of Mato Grosso do Sul) for the implementation of a solar power plant. The information was published in the DOU (Official Gazette of the State) last Thursday (6). 

With the system in operation, the expectation is that the resources saved through reduced electricity expenses will be directed to areas such as education, research, and student support.

In May, Itaipu announced investments of R$ 102 million in renewable energy projects aimed at public technical and higher education institutions in the region. Paraná quality Mato Grosso do Sul.

The project foresees the installation of 16,5 MW of photovoltaic systems, in addition to the modernization of electrical infrastructure and research laboratories across 91 university and technical campuses. The expectation is to generate annual savings of approximately R$ 10 million in energy bills for these institutions.

Distribution of investments

Of the total announced by the binational company, approximately R$ 53,8 million will be directly allocated to the implementation of photovoltaic generation systems on the campuses. Another R$ 22,8 million will be applied to improvements in electrical infrastructure and the integration of the new systems with existing networks.

In addition, R$ 25,3 million will be allocated to the acquisition of equipment for 39 university laboratories dedicated to research related to the energy sector. 

The initiative aims to reduce the operating expenses of educational institutions and expand their research and innovation capacity in areas such as energy transition, energy storage, and sustainability.
