The Gran Hotel Stella Maris, in Salvador (BA), has also entered the radar for energy storage projects. The establishment signed a contract with EDP, a company that operates in different segments of the Brazilian electricity sector, to install a BESS system.
The solution will allow for more efficient consumption management. The batteries will be charged during off-peak hours when energy tariffs are lower and used during peak periods, when demand on the electricity grid is also typically higher.
The strategy, known as load shiftThis aims to shift some consumption to more economical times, reducing electricity expenses. For hotels and resorts, which maintain activities and services throughout the day, this type of application can help make operational costs more predictable.
Unlike a system specifically designed to provide power during blackouts, in this case the focus is on managing consumption and reducing costs. The feasibility of the savings depends on applicable tariffs and the demand profile of the project.
The installation is scheduled to be completed and operations are expected to begin in January 2027.
“Energy storage has ceased to be a technology of the future and has become a strategic element in the transformation of the electricity sector. The first deployment of this system in South America reinforces our capacity to transform international knowledge into solutions that boost the competitiveness of our customers and accelerate the transition to a sustainable future,” said Tomás Baldaque, Director of Customer Solutions at EDP South America.
In a market where travelers and corporations are continuously choosing accommodations committed to socio-environmental and governance (ESG) practices, this project sets a new standard for tourism in Northeast Brazil.
“Offering excellent hospitality today goes beyond comfort, ecological awareness, or leisure. It also means having responsibility for the future of our destination. This partnership with EDP reinforces the Gran Hotel Stella Maris' commitment to innovation and sustainable tourism in Bahia, showing that it is possible to combine the best guest experience with maximum environmental impact,” said Viviane Pessoa, Marketing Director of the Gran Hotel Stella Maris.
