The Government of Santa Catarina and Celesc signed a memorandum of understanding that formalizes the preparation of a contract for the use of clean energy generated by solar farms from the concessionaire, to supply all state schools.
The expectation is that the initiative will benefit the 1.042 schools in the State served by low voltage, supplying the energy consumption of these units and generating savings of around R$20 million over ten years for the public coffers.
The change also promises to have a significant environmental impact, with an estimated reduction of more than 11 tons of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere.
The contract will include energy generated by seven Celesc solar plants, with a total installed capacity of 12 MW. Four plants are already in operation:
- UFV (2,5 MW);
- UFV Lages II (1,0 MW);
- UFV Model I (2,5 MW);
- UFV Vineyard (1,0 MW).
Three other units are nearing completion:
- UFV Capivari de Baixo (3,0 MW);
- Two new UFVs in Model (1,0 MW each), scheduled for 2025.
The signing of the memorandum of understanding was attended by the governor of the State of Santa Catarina, Jorginho Mello; the president of Celesc, Tarcísio Rosa; and the director of Generation and New Businesses at Celesc, Elói Hoffelder, in addition to the secretaries of State Aristides Cimadon (Education) and Vânio Boing (Administration), during the presentation of the balance of the Compras SC Program, which reached its year of implementation.

In 2024, some students from the Sete de Setembro Elementary School in Águas Frias carried out a research project to support the installation of solar energy in schools. It's great that this is becoming possible for a few people.
A fantastic initiative, this was also the idea behind a project developed at the Sete de Setembro Basic Education School in Águas Frias, where the students presented the cost-benefit of the implementation through facts. They were on the right track. Now they just have to wait for the implementation.
By using solar energy to supply state schools, the State not only significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions, but also generates substantial savings for the public coffers, contributing to more sustainable and efficient management.
Furthermore, the positive impact of this action can serve as a model for other regions of Brazil, promoting the use of renewable energy on a large scale.
