Unipar, a Brazilian chemical company, has signed a power purchase agreement with Casa dos Ventos. The agreement provides for the supply of an average of 33 MW for 15 years, with supply beginning in 2028. The value of the transaction was not disclosed.
The contract provides for the establishment of a joint venture between the companies, structured on a self-production model by equivalence. In this arrangement, Unipar will hold a stake equivalent to 9,8% of the economic capital of the Ventos de São Norberto complex.
The joint venture will be responsible for developing two solar power plants, each with an installed capacity of 80 MW, in the municipality of Paraíso das Águas (MS). The projects are part of the Paraíso Solar Complex.
With the new project, the petrochemical company will allocate approximately 192 MW on average to its industrial units in Brazil. Currently, the factories already operate with 100% of their electricity coming from renewable sources, either through self-generation or via long-term bilateral contracts in the free market.
Unipar also maintains three other joint ventures in the Tucano (BA), Cajuína (RN) and Lar do Sol (MG) complexes, which supply the plants in Camaçari (BA) and Cubatão (SP).
According to the company, the new contract is aligned with its decarbonization strategy and is expected to increase the competitiveness of the business, considering the regulatory benefits of self-generation – a model that allows for a reduction in sector charges levied on the portion of energy self-produced.
“This initiative contributes to the diversification of the company's energy matrix and to reducing exposure to market volatility,” says Rodrigo Cannaval, CEO of Unipar. “In a challenging scenario for the sector, energy predictability is a significant differentiator. Self-generation allows us to mitigate risks, optimize costs, and strengthen operational and financial resilience,” he adds.
For Lucas Araripe, executive director of House of the WindsThe agreement reinforces the company's ability to structure long-term solutions for large industrial consumers. "We are supporting Brazilian industry on its energy transition and decarbonization journey with solid and structured projects," he said.
