The Venezuelan government began an extended holiday this week, suspending activities in the public and educational sectors as part of a plan to reduce electricity consumption. The measure was announced by Executive Vice President Delcy Rodríguez and is expected to remain in effect until the end of Holy Week.

According to Rodríguez, the decision includes the shutdown of schools and public offices throughout the week, with the exception of services considered essential. The announcement was made during a visit to the state of Nueva Esparta and broadcast by the state television channel Venezolana de Televisión.

The initiative is part of an energy-saving program scheduled to last 45 days. According to the government, the measure aims to address the recent increase in electricity demand, associated with higher temperatures in the country. The administration also recommended that the population reduce the use of electronic devices and moderate their use of air conditioning.

Rodríguez stated that international economic sanctions impact the recovery capacity of the national electricity system. According to her, the restrictions hinder investments and maintenance of energy infrastructure.

The announcement comes amid recurring reports of power outages in different regions of the country. Interruptions have been recorded in states outside the capital, Caracas, with incidents also reported in the city itself.

The government did not provide detailed data on the increase in energy demand, but maintains its forecast of continued energy-saving measures during the announced period.
