Amazon has been named the world's largest corporate buyer of renewable energy for the fifth consecutive time, according to a survey by BloombergNEF.

With the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040, the company has dedicated itself to developing sustainable projects, including supporting more than 600 wind and solar farms around the world.

Of this amount, more than 40 projects are in countries with high fossil fuel penetration, including Australia, China, the United States, Greece, India, Indonesia, Poland and South Africa.

According to Amazon, several projects were prioritized last year in locations that could have the biggest impact on reducing emissions and improving the local environment.

For example, in India, where the grid is powered primarily by fossil fuels, the company has invested in nine large-scale solar and wind farms. In April, a 100 MW photovoltaic complex was inaugurated that will supply Amazon's operations in the country.

In Poland, three large-scale wind farms have been built, which are supporting the Polish government's goal of increasing the use of renewable energy.

In Greece, there were eight agreements, including three new wind farms, expected to provide enough energy to power more than 300 homes.

The company has also signed a series of PPAs, two of which are with Spanish giant Iberdrola: one for the 159 MW offshore wind farm East Anglia Three and another to purchase power from the 98,4 MW Juniper IIA wind farm in the United States.

Additionally, Amazon has been one of the most active data center companies in securing power purchase agreements in established markets.

In August, the multinational signed a 9,5 MW PPA with Eneos Renewable to obtain energy from the mega solar power plant of Kudamatsu, currently under construction in Kudamatsu City, Japan.

The company has also enabled over 2,7 GW of storage projects to date. This includes 11 agreements, with emphasis on the solar park Baldy Mesa, commissioned in October and comprising a generation capacity of 150 MW using batteries.

“Amazon remains committed to investing in new renewable energy projects around the world and working closely with policymakers, utilities, and other stakeholders to help our society transition to more sustainable energy sources,” the company said in an official statement.
