As retail chains continue to be the main segment of solar energy market in the remote self-consumption model, when analyzing only companies. This sector represents around 43% of assets in operation, with highlights for pharmacies and supermarkets.

The service sectors, such as banks, traders and asset managers GD (distributed generation), total 35%, being considered important channels for customer service. You remaining 22% respond to sectors such as telecommunications, fuel network, sanitation, logistics and city halls.

These data were published by greener, a research and consultancy company specializing in the solar energy market, in its latest strategic study on remote distributed generation.

Remote self-consumption is a modality that allows a micro or mini energy generator to share the excess credit generated, for example, from a photovoltaic system installed in its unit, to other properties that are under the same CNPJ or CPF and within the same distributor's concession area.

Greener's research also showed that 46% of the companies interviewed work by providing savings with a fixed value, while others 33% say there is a fixed rental fee, which is readjusted to some index, such as IPCA or IGPM.

As other companies consulted by the company were unable to specify what type of rental contract they would have. Currently, the average term of remote self-consumption contracts in Brazil is in the range of 12 years, according to Greener.

The information presented by the study takes into account companies that operate with remote generation plants equal to or above 500 kW and that are being developed to operate under the rental model.

To prepare the strategic study, Greener had the participation of 36 companies in the research, which was carried out between October and November 2023.

Growth of remote self-consumption

Currently, according to data from ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency), remote self-consumption is responsible for just over 20% of the total power installed by solar DG plants in Brazil. This corresponds to 5,5 GW of the total 25 GW of solar DG installed in the country.

This is a volume that shows that the modality has more than doubled in size in the last two years, since in the same period of 2021, remote self-consumption had just reached the then mark of 2 GW of installed capacity in solar DG .
