On May 14th, EPE (Empresa de Pesquisa Energética) will hold the Brazil-Bolivia Energy Interconnection Workshop, focusing on the use of Back-to-Back converters with VSC (Voltage Source Converter) technology for connecting the electrical systems of the two countries.
The discussion takes place after the publication of the technical-economic and socio-environmental analyses of R1 Report "Study of International Interconnection between Brazil and Bolivia (Stage I)", prepared by EPE within the scope of a binational working group focused on hydroelectric, gas and electricity integration between Brazil and Bolivia.
The debate also takes place amidst progress in negotiations between the two countries to expand regional energy integration.
According to a report published by Canal SolarBrazil and Bolivia signed an agreement for the construction of an international transmission line, which includes the installation of lines and substations between the province of Germán Busch, in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, and the municipality of Corumbá, in Mato Grosso do Sul.
According to the EPE study, alternatives were evaluated to expand regional energy integration, including the construction of transmission lines and substations in Mato Grosso do Sul.
According to EPE, the proposal aims to expand energy transmission capacity, allow the connection of new generation sources, and strengthen energy security between the South and Southeast/Central-West subsystems. The estimated investment for the project is R$ 7 billion.
Among the solutions presented by EPE is the introduction of a new 500 kV voltage level in the basic network of Mato Grosso do Sul, in addition to the use of VSC (Voltage Source Converter) technology in the frequency converter planned for the interconnection between Brazil and Bolivia.
According to the company, the technology will allow for greater control of power flow and more operational flexibility in integrating networks with distinct characteristics.
