The anticipation surrounding Brazil's first battery auction, scheduled for December of this year, is already influencing the strategies of major global storage manufacturers, who are seeking local partners to structure their participation in the bidding process.
Just last week, CATL and Jinko ESS announced, during the The smarter E South America, agreements with Moura and UCB Power, respectively, aimed at advancing the national production of equipment.
The agreement comes after the tender design stipulated the contracting of two products: one intended for systems with local content and another open to equipment of foreign origin.
The division created a dispute over nationalized solutions and helps explain the movement of international manufacturers seeking partners and production capacity in Brazil.
In this context, Jinko ESS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UCB Power to explore cooperation opportunities in the country.
Among the key points of the agreement is the possibility of industrializing the manufacturer's solutions in the country, in order to meet the local content requirements stipulated for the auction.
The strategy combines Jinko ESS's international portfolio with the industrial capacity of UCB Power, which has plants in Manaus (AM) and Extrema (MG) and has been operating in the energy storage segment for over 50 years.
Another factor considered by companies is access to financing, since nationalization could facilitate access to alternatives available in the country, including lines of credit from BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development).
“The combination of technology, local production, and access to financing mechanisms can represent an important step in reducing barriers to the adoption of BESS systems and accelerating their implementation in projects of different scales in the country,” explains Vinicius Berná, executive director of sales and new business at UCB Power.
CATL and Moura are aiming for nationalized production.
The agreement between CATL and Moura for joint action in the LRCAP-BESS (Auction for Reserved Storage Capacity) combines the storage solutions of the Chinese manufacturer with the local operations of the Brazilian company.
The agreement also seeks to enable the domestic production of equipment to meet the local content requirements of the tender.
In a statement, CATL claims to currently hold approximately 45% of the Brazilian energy storage market share, with projects in segments such as transmission, agribusiness, cold chain logistics, and industry.
Among them is the system installed in Registro (SP), in operation since December 2022. According to the company, the project uses battery storage to support a substation responsible for serving 15 municipalities and approximately 2 million inhabitants.
