ABRATE (Brazilian Association of Electric Power Transmission Companies) will allocate R$ 5 million to an R&D (Research, Development and Innovation) project aimed at increasing the climate resilience of the Brazilian transmission system.

The initiative will be conducted by the ABRATE Institute over the next 17 months. The announcement was made by the entity's president, Talita Porto, during the event “Super El Niño and the Resilience of the Brazilian Electricity Sector”, held on Thursday (20), at the headquarters of ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency), in Brasília (DF).

The project envisions the development of standards, methodologies, and analytical tools to prepare transmission infrastructure for the effects of climate change.

The work should take into account the progression and increased severity of meteorological phenomena, which require faster responses and continuous preventive and adaptive actions from companies in the sector.

The meeting brought together experts, market agents, and government representatives to discuss strategies and contingency plans in the face of climate risks faced by the SIN (National Interconnected System).

ABRATE advocates for regulatory recognition

In addition to physical damage to equipment and consequences for system operation, extreme weather events can generate financial impacts for transmission companies.

Expenses include structural reinforcement of facilities, equipment replacement, repair of damaged assets, and the adoption of technologies capable of anticipating weather risks.

According to ABRATEThese expenses can affect companies' investment capacity if they are not properly considered in regulation.

The organization's president advocated for further discussions regarding the recognition of investments made to make the transmission network more resilient.

“We need to deepen the debate on recognizing the investments made to increase the climate resilience of assets and ensure the safety and reliability of the system,” he added.

The Secretary of Electric Energy at the Ministry of Mines and Energy, João Daniel Cascalho, emphasized the need for coordination between the public sector and private agents to address the impacts of a potential Super El Niño.

According to him, the debate should encompass both institutional governance and the definition of the responsibilities of agents in adopting the measures necessary to protect the electrical system.

Cascalho also stated that the sector is prepared to face another intense climatic episode. "We will experience another Super El Niño. Naturally, we will do so because the electrical system is prepared for it and the governance is ready," he concluded.

Auction expected to generate R$ 9 billion.

During the event, ABRATE also highlighted the projected R$ 9 billion in investments in Transmission Auction No. 4/2026, scheduled for October 30th of this year.

This volume adds to the expansion cycle observed in recent years. Between 2022 and the first half of 2026, the auctions promoted by ANEEL They contracted approximately R$ 92 billion in new transmission projects.

These projects are necessary to expand the capacity for transmitting generated energy, reinforce the operational security of the National Interconnected System (SIN), and meet the growing demand. The expansion of the grid is also gaining importance given the advancement of renewable energy sources and the need to integrate new power plants into the system.
