Long-term contracts in the Free Energy Market renewable for supplying the datacenters in Brazil, they total an average of 330 MW in the last three years, with an estimated transaction amount of around R$7,7 billion.

This is what a consultancy mapping reveals CELA (Clean Energy Latin America), specialized in financial advisory and strategic consultancy for companies and investors in the renewable energy sector.

The balance, made from analyses of business carried out between renewable generators and data centers between 2021 and 2024, reveals a total of 11 long-term contracts signed, namely:

  • Seven allocated to the energy self-production model;
  • Four in the PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) system, concluded between consumers and renewable energy generators that trade in the free contracting environment.

“This is a very significant volume of long-term contracts with data centers in Brazil, considering the short period of time for implementation, three years, for a sector that is beginning to emerge in the country as a significant demander of clean, competitive and renewable energy”, assesses Camila Ramos, CEO of CELA.

According to the executive, Brazil is currently an important hub for the development of the renewable energy market for data centers and new artificial intelligence and green hydrogen technologies, given the “high competitiveness and availability of solar and wind sources in the global market,” she adds.

CELA itself has been working with data centers on energy solutions projects, including the contracting of renewable energy, all in the self-production model. The company's perspective is to serve international players seeking to establish and expand operations in Brazil.

Beyond data centers

At the beginning of the year, CELA also structured a mapping of the total number of long-term contracts in the Free Energy Market in the last year, with a total of 23 deals closed between generators and large consumers from various economic sectors.

These transactions are equivalent to 969 average MW contracted, a growth of 63% compared to the previous year, when an average of 594 MW was recorded.

In 2023, the volume financed by financial institutions of signed PPAs was R$5,4 billion, according to the CELA report. The number of contracts, on the other hand, fell slightly, from 27 agreements in 2022 to 23 in the following year.

Since the first edition of the CELA report in 2017, 140 long-term wind and solar PPAs have been mapped in the Free Energy Market, representing an installed capacity of 14,3 GW. The accumulated total of these contracts is equivalent to 4.147 average MW, of which 2.431 average MW is solar energy and another 1.717 average MW is wind energy.
