Energy storage is the new driving force in the Brazilian electricity sector. What are the main opportunities in this market?

The Brazilian electricity sector is entering a new phase. After a decade marked by the explosion of solar photovoltaic generation and the consolidation of renewable sources, the country is now facing a new challenge. How can we guarantee flexibility, stability, and power quality in an increasingly decentralized system with high variability?

The answer lies in energy storage — a technology that will inevitably become the new vector of growth, modernization and efficiency of the electricity sector.

The definitive milestone in this transformation came with the Law 15.269 / 2025which established the regulatory basis for energy storage activity in Brazil. For the first time, batteries and BESS (Battery Energy Storage Systems) are recognized as structural assets of the sector, with rules for connection, operation, remuneration, and participation in energy planning.

This progress occurs simultaneously with the preparation of Capacity Auctionwhich should consolidate energy storage as an essential resource for electrical security, grid reliability, and the massive integration of renewables.

EPE registers 368 projects for the capacity reserve auctions.

Why does storage become indispensable?

With the accelerated expansion of GD With solar power, the full opening of the free market (ACL), and the increasing electrification of the economy, Brazil is now demanding solutions that bring... balance to the system. BESS assumes exactly that role. How?

  1. Energy arbitrage (load shifting)

It stores energy during periods of lower prices and delivers it during peak hours.
It is essential for large consumers in the ACL (Free Contracting Environment), for renewable energy generators, and for hybrid projects.

  1. Demand control (peak shaving)

It reduces peak contracted demand, generating direct savings for the consumer and relieving the distribution network.

  1. Grid forming and network stability

Advanced control systems enable BESS forming voltage and frequency, something previously restricted to synchronous power plants.
The result is a more stable, robust network, capable of supporting high renewable penetration.

  1. Smart backup

Batteries ensure operational continuity for hospitals, data centers, industries, and telecommunications, replacing or complementing diesel generators.

  1. Ancillary services

Rapid response, voltage control, secondary regulation, and other services that will be increasingly in demand with regulatory evolution. ANEEL.

Energy-as-a-Service: the model that is changing the market

Another growth driver is the model. Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS), which democratizes access to storage. In it:

  • The client makes no initial investment (zero CAPEX);
  • BESS is provided as a service, with monthly or performance-based payment;
  • the system can be accounted for as OPEX, generating tax benefits;
  • The supplier operates, monitors, and maintains the entire system.

This model is becoming increasingly popular among large consumers of ACL, especially when integrated with photovoltaic plants, efficient cogeneration, hybrid microgrids, and highly critical backup systems.

The result is an integrated ecosystem where the consumer obtains savings, stability, predictability, and energy autonomy.

The impact of Law 15.269/2025 and the new regulatory instruments

Law 15.269 creates the basis for:

  1. Legal certainty and definition of storage activity

BESS will now be formally treated as an asset of the electrical system, opening up possibilities for contracts, tenders, and remuneration models.

  1. Hybrid projects and participation in ancillary services

Solar and wind power plants are now incorporating storage to increase their reliability and competitiveness.

  1. Integrating energy storage into energy planning

Within the scope of the Capacity Auction, BESS may be contracted to deliver power, flexibility, and rapid response.

  1. Expanding competitiveness in the ACL

With the full opening of the free market by 2028, BESS becomes a strategic energy management tool.

Key opportunities for the Brazilian storage market

With the new law, Brazil now offers a fertile environment for storage solutions in multiple segments:

  • Residential

Backup, self-consumption, solar integration, preparation for electric vehicles.

  • Commercial and Industrial (C&I)

Peak shaving, power quality, backup, EaaS, integration with distributed generation.

  • Utility scale (Front-of-the-Meter)

Capacity, optimized dispatch, curtailment mitigation, ancillary services.

  • Off-grid and isolated regions

Diesel replacement, microgrids for remote communities, agribusiness, and telecommunications.

  • Distribution concessionaires (T&D)

Non-Wire Alternatives (NWA), virtual grid reinforcement, voltage and frequency management.

The country is expected to surpass 2 GWh of annual BESS demand by 2028, becoming one of the world's leading emerging markets.

Why is Pylontech poised to be a leader in providing solutions for the Brazilian market?

Pylontech is a global pioneer in energy storage and a world leader in the supply of ESS systems.

  • 100% vertically integrated

Complete control of the production chain: Cell → Module → Rack → BMS → EMS → Complete System, ensuring quality, scalability, and security.

  • 15+ years dedicated exclusively to ESS
  • Over 2.000.000 systems deployed in 90+ countries.
  • complete portfolio

From compact residential solutions to high-capacity containerized systems, covering the entire market spectrum.

  • Global service centers and local presence in Brazil

Pylontech has technical team, engineering and local support, allowing for close, fast and efficient service.

  • Recognized global leadership

Ranked #1 in the global ESS market for three consecutive years and a Tier 1 supplier in storage according to SMM and BloombergNEF.

With this structure, Pylontech is strategically positioned to serve everyone from residential customers to large utilities and utility-scale projects.

In conclusion, energy storage will be the driving force behind the next energy decade in Brazil.

Brazil is definitively entering the era of energy storage. The combination of regulatory advancements, the opening of the free market, technological maturity, the expansion of renewables, and new business models such as EaaS creates a perfect environment for BESS systems to become key players in the electricity sector.

A Pylontech With its global leadership, complete vertical integration, proven track record, and local presence, the company is poised to make a decisive contribution to this evolution, supporting consumers, integrators, utilities, and developers in building the next chapter of energy in Brazil.
