The energy transition is, before being an urgent need to contain climate change, a matter of dignity for many populations. I explain.
The key point of the energy transition is to have a strategic vision so that it becomes a lever for sustainable businesses. There are locations in Brazil that suffer from energy exclusion. I'm talking about states like Amazonas, where a large part of the communities, especially far from the capital, don't even have access to electricity.
So, what we hear there are arguments that talking about energy transition in a scenario like this where riverside communities and even less distant from the capital, Manaus, still do not receive electricity, sounds like a “luxury item”, as receiving electricity would be a big step.
The energy transition needs to be disseminated as part of society's daily life. It cannot be limited to benevolent actions carried out by and for rich countries, restricted to companies that have purchasing power and, generally, an international presence, which makes them capable of spreading these models globally.
Local actions guided by global guidance are possible. Adopting strategic thinking for the energy transition in a region like the Amazon must consider the possibility of bringing solar panels so that these communities have access to electricity.
This would be a much more efficient solution than using diesel-based power generating engines (which are more polluting and have high maintenance and fuel acquisition costs). Therefore, we need to think about the transition strategically, which can open a new cycle of prosperity based on sustainable business.
As has been demonstrated, the union of all states that make up the Amazon Forest region, through the Legal Amazon Consortium, has measures to protect the forest. But you need to think and plan. As we say in Brazil, make lemonade with just one lemon.
A solar panel installation combined with an energy storage solution can be very competitive for these regions. If they don't have anything, why don't we bring them a renewable energy solution, such as solar panels, instead of bringing diesel engines?
Thus, these communities will now be able to take this step towards the energy transition and even make this a showcase for the state of Amazonas, in the heart of a region that the whole world recognizes the need to protect, for the well-being of the planet, and is in the center of attention, especially with the Brazilian presidency of the G-20 throughout 2024 and the realization of the COP30, in Belém (PA) in 2025.
