The city council of Ibiza, Spain, has launched an innovative project that promises to change residents' relationship with energy and the region's own sun.
In partnership with the technology company ImpactE, a solar map interactive that identifies the potential for photovoltaic generation on all the city's rooftops.
The free-to-use tool allows residents and public managers to discover exactly how much energy each building can generate just by taking advantage of sunlight.
According to estimates, the city can meet almost a quarter (23,8%) of its energy demand with just solar panels installed on urban and peri-urban rooftops.
Around 122 solar panels would be needed to reach a total power of 48,5 MWp, with annual generation of 66,1 GWh, enough energy to supply approximately 18.800 homes.
The expectation is to save 12,9 million euros per year and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 10,5 thousand tons. This is equivalent to planting more than 330 thousand trees or avoiding driving 65 million kilometers.
In addition to the mapping, Ibiza City Council also announced a collective self-consumption project.
Initially, 16 public buildings will receive photovoltaic systems with a capacity of 1.149 kWp, enough to supply the municipality's 73 public facilities. The savings, in this phase alone, should reach 289 thousand euros per year, with a reduction of 268 tons of CO₂.
However, the difference lies in the collective nature of the proposal: families living within a radius of up to two kilometers of these public buildings will be able to connect to the solar system, even if they live in rented accommodation or in properties without the infrastructure to install panels. The estimate is to directly benefit more than 2 families with access to clean and cheaper energy.
