Man dies after receiving electric shock: importance of using PPE

Using appropriate protective equipment is essential when installing a PV system.

At the beginning of the month, two men who were working on the roof of an establishment, located in Ipiraí – a town in the municipality of Capela do Alto Alegre (BA) – were victims of an electrical discharge during the installation of solar panels, according to information on the website Interior of Bahia.

Reports indicate that the accident happened when the module touched the high voltage wire of the electrical network, close to the project, causing the shock that caused both to fall from the ceiling. One of the victims died at the scene and the other was taken alive to the hospital.

O Canal Solar tried to contact the civil police of Capela do Alto Alegre to obtain the accident report, but did not receive a response until the closing of this report.

In view of what happened, the warning that remains is about the importance of adequate equipment and capable professionals when installing photovoltaic systems. This is what Sérgio Santos, electrical engineer at MPS Energia, emphasized.

“This news is doubly tragic, because of the death itself, but also because this fact was predicted and warned by countless professionals in the electrical field. Services close to the energy distribution network victimize painters, bricklayers and other workers not qualified for electrical services,” he said.

“The aggravating factor of this case is that it involves professionals who should necessarily know the risks involved and be prepared for them. Even more tragic, other accidents like this will still happen, but we can avoid them through a lot of information”, highlighted Santos.

According to the expert, the main precaution when installing solar panels, in terms of personal safety, is to avoid contact between the installers, their tools and the modules themselves and their infrastructures.

“For this reason, assistance must be requested from the concessionaires, who can isolate the conductors of their network, in addition to the essential use of EPC (Collective Protection Equipment) and EPI (Individual Protection Equipment) appropriate to the voltage level of the nearby network where the work will be carried out”, he concluded.
