Despite all the setbacks faced with the flow reversal, MMGD (micro and mini distributed generation) continues to advance in Brazil and already represents more than 15% of the country's installed electricity generation capacity.

According to data from Monthly Monitoring Bulletin of the Brazilian Electric System, released this week by the MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy), the total installed capacity in the country reached 247,5 GW in February, with MMGD systems accounting for 37,3 GW of this total.

In the last 12 months, the segment grew by 35%, with a jump from 27,6 GW in February 2024 to the current 37,3 GW. At the time, Brazil had around 3,3 million distributed generation systems installed.

MMGD's impressive performance positions it as the segment that grew the most in the period, even surpassing consolidated sources in the national electricity matrix.

Hydroelectric power, for example, grew by just 0,08% in the last 12 months, rising from 109,9 GW to 110 GW. Thermal generation increased by 2,13% (from 48,4 GW to 49,5 GW), while wind power expanded by 12,46%: from 29,5 GW to 33,2 GW.

Still in February, renewable sources (hydraulic, wind, solar, biomass and MMGD) represented 92,3% of the electricity generation verified in Brazil, reinforcing the leading role of clean technologies in the national matrix, according to the MME.
