The state of Pernambuco has great potential to generate energy from urban solid waste, said Yuri Schmitke, president of ABREN (Brazilian Waste Energy Association).

The executive's speech was given during his participation in the ExpoRenewables 2025, held between March 12th and 13th, at Cais do Sertão, in Recife (PE).

In the panel on energy generation from waste, Schmitke presented data from a study by the entity that indicates that the northeastern state has the capacity to generate 120 MW of installed power through UREs (Energy Recovery Plants).

These plants use non-recyclable waste to produce electricity, with the potential to supply around 610 homes.

Furthermore, according to the professional, the UREs could attract investments in the order of R$6,6 billion to Pernambuco, in addition to the creation of more than 7 thousand jobs.

“Another benefit of these UREs would be the avoided cost to public health and the environment, with a value that could reach R$8,25 billion over the next 40 years, which is the operating time of the plant,” he said.

For the construction of these plants, Pernambuco has three sanitary landfills that could be used for the installation of UREs: the Candeias Waste Treatment Center (CTR), the Pernambuco CTR and the Caruaru CTR, according to ABREN.

ExpoRenováveis, promoted by Aperenováveis (Pernambuco Renewable Energy Association), brought together experts, businesspeople, investors, students and managers, in addition to 30 exhibitors.

The event combined lectures, a multidisciplinary congress, a business roundtable and an exhibition of new technologies, including a space dedicated to electric vehicles with test drives.
