Leaders of the global renewable energy industry and the productive sector community in general have been articulating structural actions in Brazil to integrate national policies and international financing for clean sources into the action plan of the COP30 agenda this year in Belém (PA).
The proposals are contained in the document delivered this week by the GRA (Global Renewables Alliance), which brings together these private sector leaders and representatives of international organizations, to the presidency of the climate conference.
At an event held in London on June 24, the president of COP06, Ana Toni, received proposals from the business community, which include, among others, responsible licensing models in a timely manner that is appropriate to the needs of the production sector and expansion of the transmission and distribution network infrastructure for the electrification of the economy and regulation of new markets and new technologies, including offshore wind energy, green hydrogen and its derivatives, long-term energy storage and storage of reversible plants and data centers.
Executive Camila Ramos, CEO of the consultancy CELA (Clean Energy Latin America), specialized in financial advisory and strategic consultancy for companies and investors in the energy transition segment in Brazil and worldwide, was appointed to join the GRA steering committee, dedicated to COP30, to work on coordinating initiatives in favor of accelerating the energy transition and appreciation of Brazil’s climate leadership.
The group, made up of 20 executives from the business sector and international organizations, will advise the Brazilian presidency of the conference with strategic proposals for accelerating the global energy transition, focusing on mobilizing concrete commitments, integrating public policies and financing for clean energy.
“COP 30 in Brazil has everything to be a turning point that can align national policy, international financing and the action of the productive sector. With effective actions from the market and governments, we can drive a fair energy transition, in addition to meeting climate goals, strengthening energy security, increasing competitiveness and promoting long-term economic resilience”, commented the CEO of CELA.
GRA proposals for the COP 30 presidency:
- Convening a high-level moment on energy transition during COP30, with announcements of national delivery plans, ambitious targets and targeted financing;
- Setting or strengthening national renewable energy targets for 2030 and 2035, aligned with the 1,5°C limit, integrated into updated NDCs;
- Commitment to national energy grid and storage plans, with clear targets, investment portfolios and effective delivery mechanisms;
- International financial mobilization to expand the use of clean energy in emerging and developing countries, with a focus on project pipelines and reducing investment risks;
- Promoting green industry through national clean industry strategies and encouraging the use of green hydrogen in sectors that are difficult to decarbonize, such as steel and fertilizers. The goal is to present at least 20 green industrial projects by COP30;
- Beginning of an international dialogue on the orderly transition away from fossil fuels, with clear timelines (like the Brazilian NDC) and monitoring mechanisms;
- Finalization of the rules of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, with practical guidelines for corresponding adjustments and convergence between voluntary and regulated markets.
