O first half of 2024 was the best in the history of GD (distributed generation) solar in Rio Grande do Norte with 13.881 systems installed. This is what the report produced by the Solar Energy Observatory and APER (Associação Potiguar de Energias Renováveis) points out.

O report estimates that if the Rio Grande do Norte market maintains the same rhythm in the second half, 2024 will surpass 2023 by more than 51%.

Currently, the state has more than 70 thousand connected systems in distributed generation which, together, add up to approximately  671,154 MW. "THE GD Rio Grande do Norte is experiencing its hottest moment in history. Node first semester this year were more than 13,8 thousand new connections in the state, which has always been a reference in renewable energy”, commented Cássio Maia, president of APER.

"The number is 42% higher than the total connected in the same period last year, when there were still many remaining connections from GD1”, he added.

With based on the numbers of ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency), the report also points out that the State's representation in relation to the region Northeast is de 21,3% and in relation to Brazil is de 2,6%.

The region Northeast has approximately 584 thousand units with solar energy systems and country has more than 2,7 million photovoltaic systems installed. In relation to installed power, the Northeast region has around 6.020 MW and Brazil has 30.448 MW.

According to a Maia, Rio Grande do Norte quickly recovered from the poor numbers achieved at the beginning from GD II and exceeded expectations. The president also says that part of the success is due to drop in equipment prices and the recent rising energy cost, factors that led to the improvement of payback of the projects.

Still according to Maia, the reasons for the good performance continue to be the return of credit incentives, which allowed the resumption of stopped projects in 2023, and the word of mouth advertising, which leveraged new connections in GD II.

He further highlighted the educational work carried out by APER about the market and its new conditions to show the viability of the projects.

"The The result of all these initiatives was a booming market and much more mature, which tends to continue growing given the increased reliability of new projects due to success stories, the tendency for low equipment values and the Selic forecast to remain at lower levels than the current ones”, he stated.

Despite the good performance, the number of installed connections represents only 6,2% of the number of existing residences in the state, taking into account the 2022 IBGE survey. The data exposes the potential market to be explored.

Ranking of the 10 municipalities in Rio Grande do Norte

Os 10 municipalities champions in number of systems installed, accumulated since 2012, account for 65,2% the number of connections and 59,9% of installed power in the state.
