Study shows that Brazil will have 59 GW in photovoltaic solar generation

Estimates indicate that Brazil's energy matrix, in the long term, will have approximately 59 GW in solar generation and 69 GW in installed wind plants. This is what a study carried out by the German organization GIZ, in partnership with the MME (Ministry of Mines and Energy) and with the participation of EPE (Energy Research Company) and ONS (National System Operator) pointed out.

The research, which should be released later this month, shows that the hydroelectric source practically does not grow, but there must be thermal expansion. “The fact is that this matrix, which is so different from what we have today, consistent with the energy transition, points to completely different operating paradigms”, reports Marcelo Prais, IT director, Agent Relations and Regulatory Affairs at ONS.

Prais highlighted that the hydroelectric reservoirs will remain very close to flat operation (stable) throughout the year. According to him, these plants are already starting to provide other types of services, in addition to renewable sources, such as solar and wind.

Another example of the paradigm shift highlighted in the study is the marginal operating costs in the Northeast region, which will be cheaper in the dry period than in the wet period and should take off the CMO (Marginal Operating Costs) not only locally, but in other regions of the country. 

“All these numbers are reflections for us to make in relation to the change that is to come, the great challenge of the energy transition”, commented the director of ONS.

The executive also highlighted the importance of modernizing the electricity sector, which includes among its main measures the separation of ballast and energy, the opening of the market and the reduction of charges and subsidies.
