USP (University of São Paulo) was recognized as the 5th most sustainable university in the world in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2024, one of the most prestigious global rankings of sustainability in higher education.
The survey analyzed 1.477 universities from 95 countries, including 47 Brazilian institutions. USP was behind only four university centers in Europe: Wageningen University & Research (Netherlands); Nottingham Trent University (UK); University of Groningen (Netherlands); and University College Cork (Ireland)
In addition to the São Paulo university, four other Brazilian institutions were ranked among the 100 most sustainable in the world:
- UFLA (Federal University of Lavras), in 35th place;
- IFSULDEMINAS (Federal Institute of Southern Minas Gerais), in 60th place;
- UFMS (Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul), in 68th place
- Unicamp (State University of Campinas), in 76th place.
The UI GreenMetric ranking is in its 15th edition and evaluates universities based on six pillars of sustainability, namely: Environment and Infrastructure; Energy and Climate Change; Waste; Water; Transportation; and Education and Research.
Each of these aspects includes specific indicators, which are periodically reviewed to reflect current conditions and incorporate social, cultural and economic metrics of sustainability.
What is UI GreenMetric?
Created in 2010, the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings measure universities' commitment to sustainability process in a global perspective. Its main objectives are:
- Driving social change through universities to achieve sustainable goals;
- Serve as a self-assessment tool for higher education institutions;
- Disseminate to society the sustainable programs and actions implemented on university campuses.
To participate, institutions must provide institutional data and concrete evidence about their sustainable practices. These documents are reviewed by GreenMetric experts, ensuring the credibility and transparency of the results.
