Voltalia reached the milestone of 1 million carbon credits sold in 2024, equivalent to 1 million tons of CO2 avoided. The result was driven by new transactions carried out in October, which totaled more than 300 thousand tons of carbon traded through the AirCarbon Exchange in Brazil.
Of this amount, 67 thousand credits were negotiated in partnership with ISS Neutro, a Rio City Hall program that offers tax incentives to companies that adopt carbon offsetting practices, reducing the ISS rate.
The credits sold this year, equivalent to 4,7 TWh, refer to energy generated between 2016 and 2020, from the Vamcruz, São Miguel do Gostoso and Serra Pará wind complexes. All transactions were carried out through the ACX platform, a global carbon credit marketplace that recently entered into a strategic partnership with B3, the Brazilian Stock Exchange.
“Voltalia’s entry into the carbon market is aligned with our ESG strategy, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability. We believe in the essential role of renewable energy, such as wind and solar, in reducing emissions and developing this market. That is why we have been certifying our projects since 2015,” highlighted Nicolas Thouverez, CEO of Voltalia in Brazil. The company expects to generate between 400 and 500 thousand tons of carbon credits from 2025, based on ongoing projects, which represents avoided emissions.
One of the main advantages of purchasing carbon credits from Voltalia is the positive social impact that accompanies its projects. The company links its ventures to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), investing around R$2 million per year in social projects that benefit local communities and other stakeholders involved. These investments drive regional development and reinforce Voltalia's commitment to sustainability.
Reasons to invest in carbon credits
Each carbon credit represents a reduction of one tonne of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent emitted into the atmosphere. They play a crucial role in the fight against climate change by enabling companies and individuals to offset their emissions by supporting greenhouse gas emission reduction projects around the world.
They are also a tool used to help countries meet their goals set out in climate agreements, such as the Paris Agreement. In the agreement, many countries have committed to limiting global warming to well below 2°C, and carbon credits are part of national strategies to achieve these goals.
Investing in carbon credits not only supports the transition to a low-carbon economy, but also offers lucrative opportunities. With increasing awareness of the importance of sustainability, the carbon credit market is booming.
