A ANEEL The Brazilian National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) has authorized the remuneration of ancillary services provided by generators throughout 2024. The package includes three functions considered critical to the operation of the Interconnected System: self-restoration, secondary frequency control, and SEP (Special Protection System).
According to the order, it will be up to the ONS (National Electric System Operator) to assess which power plants have the technical capacity to offer each service, consolidate individual performance, and, based on that, subsidize the payments due by the agency.
What are ancillary services?
In the electricity sector, ancillary services are essential functionalities for maintaining the grid's safe and stable operation – even though they are not directly linked to energy production. They help preserve the voltage, frequency, and reliability standards required for the centralized operation of the system.
According to ANEELSelf-restoration is the ability of a power plant to exit a shutdown state and resume operation without external support to supply its own auxiliary services. This characteristic is strategic for accelerating the system's recovery after major disturbances.
Secondary frequency control involves the operation of generating units to restore the programmed system frequency or adjust the exchange of active power between them. subsystems, contributing to the dynamic balance between load and generation.
The SEP (System of Electronic Protection) encompasses Emergency Control Schemes and Security Control Schemes – automatic mechanisms that, upon identifying risk conditions, execute actions to protect the integrity of the SIN (National Interconnected System) and its equipment.
