Esporte Clube Bahia has received the international I-REC (International Renewable Energy Certificate), a document that proves that the energy consumed by the club in the Free Energy Market originates from renewable and traceable sources.

The certification is the result of a partnership with the trading company of the Neoenergia group, responsible for supplying energy to the Evaristo de Macedo Training Center, located in Dias d'Ávila (BA).

The agreement, initiated in 2024, allowed the club to adopt an electricity grid based entirely on renewable energy, as part of a strategy focused on modernizing management and adopting more sustainable practices.

Between April and December 2025, the period covered by the certification, Bahia avoided the emission of 37,3 tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂), a volume equivalent to planting 227 trees, according to calculations presented by the club.

The certificate was issued by Totum Institute, responsible for issuing I-RECs in Brazil, based on energy consumption and contracting data recorded in the agreement signed between Bahia and Neoenergia.

Just over a year ago, the Tricolor de Aço (Bahia's nickname) became one of the pioneers of Brazilian football by migrating from the regulated market to the Free Energy Market, switching to energy from Neoenergia's renewable power plants.

With a five-year contract to service the Evaristo de Macedo Training Center, the club projects savings of approximately R$ 2,2 million in energy costs over the period.

Brazilian football is making progress on the sustainability agenda.

Bahia is not the only Brazilian club to adopt measures aimed at decarbonizing its operations through the Free Energy Market and renewable energy origin certification.

In March of this year, the Sport Recife announced a partnership with Neoenergia. to supply the Ilha do Retiro stadium, the José de Andrade Médicis training center, and the club's administrative headquarters with 100% renewable energy certified through I-RECs. According to the club, the initiative aims to reduce emissions associated with electricity consumption and reinforce its sustainability strategy.

Another example is Atlético Mineiro. In March 2025, Arena MRV once again received renewable energy certification from Cemig, proving that all the electricity consumed by the stadium in 2024 came from clean sources. According to the club, the initiative prevented the emission of approximately 190 tons of CO₂ during that period.

The arena also operates in the Free Energy Market and adopts other measures aimed at sustainability, such as waste management, preservation of green areas, and efficient use of resources.
