Fiocruz (Fundação Oswaldo Cruz) received the I-REC (International Renewable Energy Certificate) seal, which certifies the exclusive use of electrical energy from renewable sources, such as solar and wind, between April and December 2024.
The seal is recognized globally and attests to the traceability of energy consumed, reinforcing the institution's alignment with sustainable practices and ESG principles.
The certification is a result of Fiocruz's accession to the Free Energy Market, adopted last year and which allowed a reduction of more than 7 thousand tons of CO₂ equivalent in the atmosphere.
The volume avoided is equivalent to the annual emissions of more than 5 gasoline-powered popular cars or the carbon capture carried out by around 50 trees over 20 years.
The initiative is part of the institution's efforts to strengthen environmental management and contribute to the UN (United Nations) SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), especially the commitments of the 2030 Agenda.
Public I-RECs
In addition to Fiocruz, other federal public institutions have also sought I-REC certification as a way to demonstrate their consumption of renewable energy. The Ebserh Network, responsible for managing the Ministry of Education's federal university hospitals, has already implemented the use of 100% renewable energy with traceability.
Another example is Banco do Brasil, a state-controlled company, which reached the milestone of 100% of its electricity being compensated by I-REC certificates, covering more than 530 MWh with energy from wind and solar sources.
These cases reflect a broader movement in the public and private sectors: in 2024, Brazil became the second country with the largest volume of I-REC certificates traded in the world, with almost 50 million units issued, according to data from the program's international platform.
