Itaipu Binacional confirmed to Canal Solar which intends to implement a battery storage system at its floating solar power plant. The initiative aims to evaluate the integration between solar generation and energy storage, as well as measure the contribution of these technologies to the stability of the electrical system.
In addition to the storage project, the company reported that it is also studying the installation of two new generating turbines at the hydroelectric plant. The proposal is being analyzed jointly with the ONS (National System Operator) and EPE (Energy Research Company), focusing on increasing the availability of power for the system.
Itaipu also highlighted that, being a binational power plant, any investments would benefit both Brazil and Paraguay. According to the company, the neighboring country, with approximately 6,8 million inhabitants, is currently supplied entirely by renewable sources.
floating solar plant
As previously reported by Canal Last year, Itaipu Binacional began installing its first floating solar power plant on the Paraguayan side of the reservoir.
The project will occupy an area of approximately 10 m² and will feature around 1.500 photovoltaic modules, totaling an installed capacity of 1 MWp.
At the time, in an exclusive interview with Canal Rogério Meneghetti, superintendent of Renewable Energies at Itaipu Binacional, stated that the initiative will serve as a platform for the development of new, larger-scale solar projects by the company.
