Integrating solar energy into architectural projects can be the key to achieving more energy-efficient buildings. When planned strategically, the photovoltaic system can generate more energy and also contribute to reducing the thermal load, shading the envelope and controlling light, thus maximizing the benefits of solar energy.
If there is a common mistake I see when it comes to solar energy in architecture, it is the idea that all you need to do is install some solar modules on the roof and that's it: sustainable house, low electricity bill and problem solved. This is not quite the case.
What few people realize is that the efficiency of a solar system integrated into architecture starts with architectural planning. The way the building is designed directly impacts the performance of the solar modules and the thermal comfort of the spaces.
And I say this with the experience of someone who has dedicated more than two decades to this subject. I have been a specialist in solar architecture for 22 years and had the honor of working for 17 years as a researcher at the UFSC Photovoltaic Laboratory, where I developed my master's, doctorate and post-doctorate research. Today I work on projects for Arquitetando Energia Solar and with the execution of BIPV Solar Warranty.
My work has always been focused on understanding how architecture and photovoltaic technology can work together to create energy-efficient and sustainable buildings. If you really want to understand how architectural planning influences the efficiency of solar systems and learn how to differentiate a well-designed project from a simple adaptation without strategy, then come with me.
