Estimates of McKinsey point out that global spending on data center acquisition and installation will exceed US$250 billion by 2030. The United States alone represents about 40% of the global data center market. data centers and should reach 35 GW by 2030, according to the study.

Last Tuesday (07), Donald Trump announced investments of more than US$ 20 billion to build data centers in the USA. The investor is Hussain Sajwani, a billionaire from the United Arab Emirates, chairman of DAMAC Properties. With the expansion of AI (Artificial Intelligence), the use of data centers, physical locations where computing machines and equipment are stored, bringing together servers, storage units, network equipment, etc., also grows.

For them to work well, the location must have access to electrical current to power the servers and be well ventilated to prevent computers and other tools from overheating, in addition to having a backup power supply system to ensure that the service is provided without interruptions.

Data centers: long-term contracts for renewable sources total R$7,7 billion

The Data Center market has also been growing in Brazil. According to ABCD (Brazilian Data Center Association), the country has electrical system reliability rates comparable to those of Chile and higher than those of Argentina and Colombia. Furthermore, the association points out that the Brazilian energy supply is predominantly renewable, with expansion projections, mainly for the solar and biomass sectors in the coming decades.

McKinsey points out that hyperscale companies, such as Google, Amazon and Microsoft, demand enough energy to supply 80 thousand homes, therefore, the need to make the energy source of data centers sustainable is great.

According to José Marangon, PhD in Electrical Engineering and professor at MC&E Canal Solar, “data centers are a large load concentrated at a certain point, so you have to prepare the transmission system for the direct load on the basic transmission network”.

“Therefore, the electrical grid needs to be notified in advance, as it is necessary to prepare the system with lines that can provide this constant power”, concludes the professor.
