Part of the central region of São Paulo (SP) is without electricity this Tuesday (03) after a problem not yet identified by Enel. The blackout occurred without any record of intense rain and affected more than 30 thousand consumers in the early afternoon, according to a bulletin released by the concessionaire.
In a statement, the company reported that technical teams are working to identify the cause of the interruption in a section of the network that supplies Avenida 9 de Julho, Avenida Higienópolis, and the surrounding area. "The area is served by an underground distribution system, which requires specific technical procedures to identify the point of the incident," Enel stated.
To mitigate the impact, the utility company highlighted that it has deployed generators for emergency response. "Teams continue to work continuously to identify the causes, reconfigure the network, and restore service to everyone," the company stated.
Recurring problems
The new blackout occurs amidst a series of episodes involving power supply failures in Greater São Paulo. Last Friday (30), a preventive interruption in the supply resulted in a fire in a generator at Icesp (São Paulo State Cancer Institute). During the incident, a patient died after being transferred to another unit.
In December, another large-scale blackout worsened the energy supply crisis in the region, leaving approximately 4,4 million people without power for several days, according to data released by Enel São Paulo. The incident generated a strong reaction from the population and intensified criticism of the utility company's actions.
Enel updates figures: blackout impacted more than 4 million customers in São Paulo.
Given this history, the continuation of Enel's contract in São Paulo is under evaluation by... ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency). Both the mayor and the state governor have already expressed their opposition to maintaining the concession in its current form.
Initially, ANEEL The company had approved the renewal of the concession for another 30 years, but popular and political pressure following the blackouts recorded in the last two years led to the opening of a termination process, which could result in the early termination of the distributor's contract.
