In a press conference held on the morning of this Thursday (17), the Enel-SP reported that the total number of properties affected by the storm last Friday (11) in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo was 3,1 million, instead of the 2,1 million previously disclosed by the company.
“We found that the number of customers (addresses) that were interrupted was actually 3,1 million. I will repeat: 3,1 million customers were without power during the initial phase of the incident. Until now, we had been saying that this number was 2,1 million,” Guilherme Lencastre, president of Enel-SP, told reporters.
The executive said that the data update occurred because approximately 1 million consumer units served by the company had their supply automatically restored by 23:59 pm on Friday (11), the date of the storm. This would not have been accounted for in Enel-SP's initial bills.
“Over the last few days, we have found that between 19pm and 23:59pm on the 11th, many customers were without power and had it restored within this time frame. This means that at 23:59pm on the 11th, we have a total of 2,1 million customers (affected),” he commented.
Lencastre also revealed that on the day that heavy rains hit Greater São Paulo, the company had “no forecasts of winds as strong as what happened.” At the time of the incident, he says that the distributor’s entire workforce was deployed.
“It is important to say that, after a few days, we can confirm that this was the biggest climate event with wind gusts in the history of the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo. Since 1995 (when measurements began) there has been no record of wind intensity like this,” he highlighted.
The president of Enel-SP also regretted the incident and said that the concessionaire intends to double the number of tree prunings carried out in 2024. Last year, 320 were carried out. This year, so far, 420 have been completed. This number should reach 600 by December.
“We recognize that this was an extreme event that impacted many homes and businesses. We want to say that we are sensitive to our customers. Some of them are even our employees,” said Lencastre.

Customers who are still without power
The president of Enel-SP also said at the press conference that around 36 thousand properties belonging to the company are still without electricity supply throughout the region, but that this number is within the normal range of the company's operations.
“At this moment, we have 36 customers without power. This means that our business is operating very close to normal. We have 8,2 million customers,” he said.
“A normal operation oscillates between this level: 36 thousand or a little more. We continue to mobilize our task force, working in the field. It is possible that there are cases of older clients and these are the priorities that we will establish now”, highlighted the executive.
