Itaipu Binacional began this Thursday (13) the implementation of its first floating solar plant, which will have around 2 thousand photovoltaic panels installed on the waters of the reservoir.

The project, located on the Paraguayan side of the plant, will occupy an area of between 7 and 10 square meters and will have a capacity of 1 MWp – enough energy to supply approximately 650 homes.

The service order was signed yesterday by Itaipu's general directors, Enio Verri (Brazil) and Justo Zacarias Irún (Paraguay), together with representatives of the Sunlution-Luxacril binational consortium, responsible for developing the plant.

O the project has a period of 150 days for execution and another 180 days for technical assistance, training and final acceptance.

With an experimental nature, the floating solar plant aims to evaluate the technical feasibility and environmental impacts of this technology, enabling its future expansion in Itaipu and the implementation of new similar projects in Brazil and Paraguay.

“The idea behind this project is to take advantage of the structure of a hydroelectric plant to produce solar energy. I am convinced that in a few years we will be offering this energy to society,” said Verri.

Advantages of floating solar energy

According to Itaipu Binacional, in addition to generating clean energy, this plant model offers several environmental benefits, such as:

  • Preservation of land areas, by avoiding deforestation and the occupation of fertile land for the installation of solar panels;
  • Evaporation reduction, by contributing to the conservation of the reservoir’s water resources;
  • Mitigation of algae formation, by helping to preserve aquatic ecosystems.

Investment and project execution

The consortium chosen to install the plant, formed by the companies Sunlution (Brazilian) and Luxacril (from Paraguay), won the bid with a value of US$ 854,5 thousand – a discount of 11,72% in relation to that foreseen in the notice.

The contract includes the delivery of the engineering project, electrical equipment, control and instrumentation system, mechanical structure, civil and structural works, construction, assembly and commissioning.
